Composer’s Note:

For this snippet of the film, my goal was to have my music have a push and pull feel with the audience if it belongs. In the beginning, I adopted a modern, restrained approach, allowing the music to hide with the different cuts. As the director said, “the two sides of Matty’s life – as a paid care worker for June and an unpaid carer for his grandad – collide” and the score mirrors his escalating panic through percussive movements and a tightening rhythm. I achieved that by cluttering the music with layers of recordings and increasing the tempo.

My first thought with this film was to take inspiration from Studio Ghibli. however as I continued writing ideas, I realized that for me, adding emotions to the ordinary, downplaying the spectacle, and focusing on humanity or being nostalgic wasn’t the way I wanted to portray this film. I wanted to mimic the film's emotions and let it speak for itself. I played around with the same chord progression for the whole film, creating variations and fragmenting the original melody that I wrote (which plays for the ending around 2:16), into each section that we hear.
